Lacquered

Today's Outfit Details

Dress: Shoshanna Navy Abbie Dress in Navy

The dress is made of a lacquered tweed, so it won't easily wrinkle. I love the faux black leather trip around the neck and arm holes for that little something extra. The dress is also available on Bluefly.com.

A version of the dress is also available in white.

Eye Shadow: NARS Dogon

Shoes: Prada Cut-Out Booties

I know many people had today off for MLK Day, but I wasn't one of them. I don't think I've ever had this day off my entire career. I am currently reading The Invention of Wings, by Sue Monk Kidd, so I have been thinking quite a bit about our country's early days. This novel delves into the relationship between a slave girl, Handful, and her owner, an early feminist named Sarah. I'm only about halfway through, but both voices are so powerful. I highly recommend this book, and my Kindle version came with notes from Oprah herself. If you liked Ms. Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees, which I devoured, you should pick up this book as well.

A Color Shout

I love all the colors weaving in and out of this tweed Shoshanna dress. Just looking at it brightens my day.

I may look tired because I had to rush George to the vet last night after his left eye started watering, and I noticed he was struggling to keep it open. It turns out, the poor guy has an ear infection in his right ear and an eye ulcer in his left eye.

George had an eye ulcer - a pretty severe one - back in 2006. Fortunately, we caught this one early. If your pug starts winking at you, it's not because he or she knows something you don't. Your pug could, in fact, be having some eye problems.

George is home today in a cone, but hopefully on the road to recovery.

Seeing Things

I certainly did not have the relaxing weekend with my boys that I had planned. When I went to bed this past Friday night, my eye was bothering me, and the pain became increasingly worse throughout the night. Early Saturday morning, I was diagnosed with an eye ulcer in my left eye. It's my first one. I hope I never have one again.

The punishment is that I cannot wear my contacts for at least a few weeks. I have not worn glasses to the office... ever. It's the nerdy 12-year-old girl in me that refuses to be seen in public in eyeglasses. Hopefully they don't look so bad, since I'll be wearing them every single day for a little while. Scroll down for a look.

Rainy Day Blue

It's raining cats and dogs today, so I thought I would wear a dress to match the weather. I think this blue dress is just beautiful; the pattern and the colors remind me of the ocean in moonlight.

Whimsical Whales

There is something so sweet and whimsical about this whale patterned dress from Eva Franco. I think the print, combined with the fit and flare silhouette, make it a perfect casual Friday or weekend wear dress.

The dress is denim, so it's actually quite heavy. I don't have too many denim dresses.

This particular dress is no longer available, but Amazon has a fit and flare design with a front zipper in a beautiful forest green and wine. (Wine is apparently the color for Fall 2014, too.) I would also check out this cute black and white bow dress. It has a similar sense of whimsy.

The sandals are sold out, but here is a comparable style. See all L.A.M.B. sandals at Amazon.

If my hair doesn't look as sleek as normal, it's because I had a mishap with my straightening iron this morning. The cap from my hairspray came off and somehow became wedged between the two halves of the straightener. I didn't notice when I turned it on, and I had melted plastic soon after. Fortunately, my back up straightener worked okay, but it's not my first choice. Lesson learned!

I am still feeling under the weather, but definitely on the road to recovery. Have a great weekend!

Love Lace

In the right context, lace can make an amazing addition to any outfit.

I like the use of it on this work appropriate dress from Trina Turk; the color serves to highlight the intricate design, but it's not too dressy for the office.

What do you think? Would you wear lace to work?

If I look a little paler than usual, it's because I am most likely coming down with a sinus infection. I always get sick around this time of year when the seasons start to change. I have a busy weekend ahead, so hopefully I will feel better soon. Happy Thursday!
