Red Warrior

I'm gearing up for a busy week, so I thought I would start things off in a bold color. Red is such an attention-grabbing hue, and when it's paired with a unique silhouette, it makes for such a memorable ensemble.

Dress: Shoshanna Giana Ruffle Sheath Dress (no longer available)

Shoes: Jimmy Choo Romy Embroidered Satin Pumps (no longer available)

I wasn't feeling that great this past weekend -- the changing weather, going from temperatures in the 90s to the 40s, makes my head hurt with the pressure -- so I tried to rest and relax as much as possible. Sometimes you need that downtime to be at your best!

Our fridge died, so one of the highlights of my weekend was picking out a new one. It was delivered today!

I also hit a new PR (personal record) on the Peloton bike for a 45-minute ride. I have been loving the Tabata rides from Robin Arzon. She really gets my heart rate up.

  • Output: 537
  • Calories Burned: 444

I really feel like I get more out of the bike than any other cardio machine. I've been working out consistently for almost 20 years now, so at this point, I'm fairly fit. I have a slow heart rate, and it takes a lot to wear me out. Even running... I definitely don't burn as many calories in the same time frame. If you want to switch up your workout routine, I definitely recommend this bike.

Feeling Like Fall

It's mid-October and it's now truly starting to feel like Fall. I just want to enjoy this mild weather while I can. Even though today's high is 78, I still felt it was time to bring my long-sleeve dresses out of hibernation... like this beautiful floral dress from Parker.

Outfit Details

Dress: Parker Brooke Floral Long-Sleeve Dress

I adore the teal color -- it's so on trend right now -- and the design is ultra flattering. The dress is also really comfortable, so it's perfect for the office. Mondays are always so busy for me, so it's nice to wear something that isn't binding on these stressful days.

Shoes: Sophia Webster Andie Bow 100 High-Heel Sandals

These shoes exemplify why women love shoes -- they are so gorgeous and chic. I have been loving the designs from Sophia Webster lately, so hopefully more styles will go on sale soon. You really have to keep an eye out for a good deal on this brand.

Jailhouse Hot

I guess I'm sticking with stripes this week! This Parker dress is casual and chic, but does remind me a little of an old fashioned prisoner outfit.

Outfit Details

Dress: Parker Penny Striped Knit Dress

The dress is so comfortable, made of a knit material that shows off your curves. I'm wearing my normal size in this brand, a small, but it's a little big since the material stretches so nicely!

Shoes: Prada Black and White Striped Bow Pumps (no longer available)

I sure went matchy-matchy today with the shoes and dress both being striped, but that's how I roll.

It's Finally Sweater (Dress) Weather!

It finally feels like Fall, which means I am not sweating profusely the moment I step foot outside. Today's dress is still sleeveless, but it's made of a heavier, sweater-like material that is perfect for this grey day in Atlanta.

Outfit Details

Dress: BCBGMaxAzria Dotted Stripe Body Con Dress

While horizontal stripes aren't the best choice for a body con dress, I was drawn to the flattering details and overall design and color scheme.

You can find the dress at several online retailers, including the BCBG website, Lord & Taylor and Saks Off 5th.

I know the dress is a little casual, but hopefully the fancy pumps help dress it up a bit!

Shoes: SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker Arielle Suede Pumps

The photos really don't do a good job showing off the beauty of these shoes! I just love them. They are sparkly in the front and have sparkly heels, too! I love a girly shoe.

Weekend Update:

Since it's Monday, here's a quick rundown on what I did this weekend. It wasn't much... which is a good thing:

  • I slept -- a lot. Saturday morning I slept in until 11 a.m. Getting 12 hours of sleep is a rarity for me.
  • I finished Demi Moore's book, Inside Out: A Memoir. I gave it three stars. I enjoyed it, but felt she could have revealed a lot more. For example, I was interested to know about how she built her career, how she made certain choices and why.
  • Chapin and I finished the Netflix show, Unbelievable. It's very compelling, and very relevant in today's "Me Too" society. It's definitely worth a watch, though you won't want to binge it all at once -- it's too heavy for that. I think we watched two episodes at a time. There are only eight total, so you'll still finish fast.
  • Chapin cooked for me both Saturday and Sunday nights. He is such an amazing chef. I am so lucky he's my husband.

Allison

TGIF! It's been a long week, so I'm extra glad today is Friday. As you can see from my face, I am exhausted; I have been stressing about work and not really sleeping well as a result. I'm looking forward to a restful and relaxing weekend.

Today feels like the unofficial last day of summer, even though it's October 4th. The last few weeks have been so hot in Atlanta, but temperatures are supposed to cool down starting tomorrow. I can't wait.

Outfit Details

DressALLISON New York Cotton Stripe Maxi Dress

This dress is my first from the ALLISON New York brand. I was drawn to the neckline, the sweet, ruffled straps (adjustable!) and the overall look; it's the perfect dress to wear on a hot day, when you want something light, airy and just really comfortable. (It's also ideal for a more casual Friday at the office!) I will definitely buy the brand again! #ALLISONGIRLS

ShoesLoeffler Randall Miranda Espadrille Wedge Sandals

These shoes are no longer available, but you can shop espadrilles and other sandals on the brand's website.

Cornflower Blue

I was mostly drawn to this dress due to the color; isn't it an amazing shade of blue? It reminds me so much of the Cornflower Blue straight out of a box of Crayola crayons.

Outfit Details

Dress: Kate Spade New York Flora Dress

I bought the dress on sale, mostly because I knew the fit would be slightly off at the top. Anytime you have something fancy around the armpits, even a detail as small as scalloped edges, it just never works. Overall, though, it's just a pretty dress, so the benefits do outweigh that one flaw.

Shoes: SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker Infinity Pumps

The shoes are sold out, but here's a very similar style.

Fun Prints, Atypical Silhouette

Today's dress is a little different for me, but I love it! I was drawn to the fun print -- it's travel themed, so it's full of palm trees, waterfalls, guitars, flowers and more -- but I also really liked that it was a fit and flare dress... with a twist!

  • No zippers; just a few buttons at the collar.
  • One ruffle down the middle.
  • A little shorter than normal for me, hitting above the knee.

I think it all comes together for a cool, casual and chic dress that you can easily dress up or down. I might try it with a belt next time.

Outfit Details

Shoes: Schutz Miranda Heeled Sandals in Rose (sold out)

I kept with the fun theme of today's outfit by choosing these Schutz sandals. They look like they are spattered with different colors of pink paint, and since there is pink in the print on the dress, I thought it was the perfect fit.

Vacation Dreams

I wore this dress for the first time this past May, on our way to the Turks & Caicos! I would love a beach vacation right about now...

Outfit Details

Dress: Free People Isla Floral Midi Sundress

You can still buy the dress, even though it's been in stores for about six months. Find it at:

The dress also comes in black!

The dress is made with very thin material, so it's perfect for hot weather. It will be in the 90s again today in Atlanta, so even though it's technically Fall now, it still really feels like the middle of summer.

I love the print and the ties at the shoulders. It's casual but super chic!

Shoes: Loeffler Randall Gabby Espadrille Wedge Pumps (no longer available)

I adore these wedges and have worn them all summer long!

Sunset

Today's dress brings to mind a quotation from The Hunger Games series, when Peeta tells Katniss about his favorite color (orange). In the following passage from Mockingjay, Katniss reminds Peeta of their conversation once he's lost part of his memory.

This orange color is definitely a sunset orange, don't you think?

Outfit Details:

Dress: Karen Millen Orange High Neck Keyhole Dress (no longer available)

Shoes: Jimmy Choo Hesper Strappy Sandals

Orange and gold are perfect colors to wear today, because... It's the first day of Fall. Bring on the pumpkin spice!

Dresses for Less

Since I have way too many dresses, I recently decided to clean out my closet and part ways with dresses that I (a) had not worn in at least two years or (b) that simply didn't fit me well. I had a rack full of about 140 dresses at my neighborhood porch sale this past weekend. I tagged each and every one, thinking each time of when I had last worn it, or when I had originally bought it. Some people have smell memories; I have dress memories.

Ultimately, though, I ended up selling... only four dresses. Hardly anyone came to shop, so I was hugely disappointed. I spent a lot of my precious weekend hours getting ready for the sale.

I've decided now to sell some of those dresses on Poshmark, a site for buying and selling fashion. Check out my items here. I plan to add a lot more dresses to my Poshmark "closet" in the coming weeks. If Poshmark is a bust, I will try some local consignment shops, but Poshmark takes 20% commission as opposed to 35% at local boutiques like Alexis Suitcase, so I definitely want to see if Poshmark can work for me. eBay is another option I might try.

If you have any other ideas, please leave them in the comments!

Outfit Details

Today's dress is one I've owned for a few months. The pastel pink color combined with the knit fabric make it perfect for spring, but since I waited too long to wear it, a hot day in September will have to do! The high today is 95 degrees, though. Sheesh!

Dress: Parker Paulette Knit Pink Dress

You can find the dress at Amazon and the Parker website. My husband even paid me a compliment today: "For a high neck dress, that's pretty," he said.

Shoes: Sophia Webster Rosalind Gem Sandals

I adore these shoes! Aren't they beautiful?

Sparkle and Shine

The colors of today's Rebecca Taylor dress are so beautiful, and they are getting me excited for fall. I'll be very glad when these searing temperatures start falling! It's just way too hot out.

Outfit Details

Dress: Rebecca Taylor Giverney Fleur Dress in Metallic Amethyst

I love the more laid back nature of today's dress, and though you can't really tell in the photo, it's full of metallic threads that help the whole look shine. The dress is mostly sold out, but you can still find it at Saks Off 5thZappos and Amazon!

Shoes: Jimmy Choo Edina Sparkle Sandals

What better way to showcase these gorgeous Jimmy Choos than with a metallic dress to match! I guess I'm a kid at heart, because I still love anything that sparkles.

98 Degrees

It's so hot! I love summer, but I can't take much more of these high 90s temperatures in September. Sheesh!

At least I still have time to wear some of my cute summer dresses, like this one from Marc Jacobs. I just love this little dress so much, from the black and white striped piping to the fit and flare silhouette. There is just one thing I would change: make the straps adjustable. Oh well - nothing is perfect, right?

Yes, Wear White After Labor Day

Just call me a rule breaker, because I hate following "rules" when it comes to fashion. If you want to wear white after Labor Day... wear it! Fashion is about wearing what makes you feel beautiful and confident.

I'm probably breaking more than one rule with today's outfit, since the dress is white and navy -- and I'm wearing black and white shoes. But the shoes, with their dotted pattern, matched too perfectly with the pattern on the dress; I just had to put them on!

Outfit Details

Dress: Shoshanna Carter Geo Lace Dress

The dress is no longer available to buy -- but you can rent it!

Shoes: Sophia Webster Mika Polka Dot Leather Pumps (no longer available)

You can probably tell by my shiny face that it's extremely hot and humid in Atlanta. The temperatures are still in the 90s, and Fall seems so far away. I look forward to that crisper weather arriving soon. In the meantime, hopefully you are taking advantage of all those end-of-summer sales; I know I am!

Happy shopping!

My Love of High Neck Dresses

I have a long neck and small shoulders, so I've always loved turtlenecks and high neck tops and dresses. There is something about the design that is so flattering on my frame.

That's probably why I'm so in love with today's Kate Spade dress, which features a high neck, flutter sleeves, and cute bow design. I knew as soon as I saw it that it was meant to be mine.

Shoes: SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker Strut Dress Sandals (no longer available)

I'm still coming off a high of having Sarah Jessica Parker comment on one of my Instagram posts. I may be wearing her shoes every day for the foreseeable future. ;)

SJP and the Power of Instagram

I love social media! It puts us in touch not only with our friends and loved ones, but with people we admire and strive to emulate (from a distance). Sometimes, those individuals will reach back out to their fans, and over the years I've had dialogues with authors (Emily Giffin, Liane Moriarty), models (Paulina Porizkova responded to a comment I left on one of her posts), TV actors (Caroline in the City's Eric Lutes follows me), but never have I been so excited about an interaction with a celebrity.

Sarah Jessica Parker left a comment on my last post. Yes, the iconic SJP, whom I have loved since I was a girl watching Girls Just Want to Have Fun, and later as a woman watching Sex and the City, knows I exist in this world.

That was enough to make my day... my year!

Long live SJP!

Parker

Chapin and I hosted a fun dinner party Saturday night, but all the cooking, cleaning, baking and clean-up made the weekend fly by! I'm also deep into re-watching Felicity, one of my favorite 90s shows, which is really making me reminisce about college. I can't believe next year will mark 20 years since I graduated Emory!

Outfit Details

This Parker dress is one I've had my eye on for quite awhile, and it finally went on sale. I love the overall design, with the flutter sleeves, v-neck and tie waist; it's very cool-casual, perfect for summer.

Dress: Parker Elijah Striped Chiffon Flutter-Sleeve Dress

Find the dress on the Parker New York website, as well as Neiman Marcus and Revolve Clothing.

Shoes: Vince Camuto Leera Espadrille Ankle-Strap Wedge Sandals in Pea Pod

The mint green stripes seem to get lost amidst the gold, silver and black, so I wore these wedges (color: Pea Pod) to bring the color out a bit. The shoes were a gift from my sister-in-law, and they are just so comfortable. They come in a variety of colors, too.

Buy these wedges on Amazon, Dillards.com, Lord & TaylorMacys.com, NordstromZappos and the Vince Camuto website. They seem to be everywhere!

I'm gearing up for a busy week, so... Happy Monday!

Heat Wave

It's so hot and humid out, the air seems to have a yellow haze to it. I'll be glad when this heat wave subsides! We at least had some rain last night here in Atlanta, though the storm woke both me and Chapin up around 1 a.m. -- so that's why I look so tired today!

Outfit Details

My dress choices lately have been very "constricting," so today I wanted to wear something that was a bit lighter and more free flowing. This Jill Jill Stuart dress, my first from this brand, is not only airy, but has such a cute floral pattern. It will really work in a lot of seasons, and the tie waist and flutter sleeves make it extra flattering.

Dress: Jill Jill Stuart Navy Floral Dress

Find it at Bloomingdale'sNeiman Marcus and Zappos.

Hi Ho, Silver

I'm starting out this incredibly hot and humid week in a black and silver dress by Likely. I bought the dress months and months ago on RueLaLa.com. It's super chic and flattering, with a design that easily shows off the arms and back.

Outfit Details

Dress: Likely Black and Silver Fit and Flare Dress (no longer available)

Unfortunately, this dress is no longer available, but I've been loving the designs from the Likely brand over the last few seasons, which you can find on the company's website as well as retailers like Saks. Likely is relatively lower priced (compared to other leading brands), so sometimes the quality is lacking and the sizing is a little off. I usually size up if a dress is more form fitting, for example.

Shoes: SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker Taylor Closed Toe T-Strap Pumps

Weekend Update

Chapin and I had a great weekend, seeing friends and buying new kitchen furniture. I also ran in a 5K and took third place in my age group. It was so hot, I couldn't believe I did at all well.  I really have to slow my speed to last in the heat and humidity. I think I will wait a few months to do any other runs outside...

Made for Miami

Summer is definitely a good time to experiment with fashion. Today's dress seems made for a professional office setting in Miami, but I live in Atlanta, so the loud colors and body-con design are a little out of place.

But the dress is so colorful and flattering to your curves... it's ideal for a hot summer day, and it is certainly hot today!

Outfit Details

As Seen on TV!
Petra recently wore the dress on Jane the Virgin!

Linda Hamilton Arms

Aside from being one of the best science fiction movies of the last few decades, Terminator 2: Judgment Day is also known for the ripped shape of its female protagonist. "Linda Hamilton arms" became something to aspire to in my own workouts, though even now, I feel I don't quite measure up... but I'm 'working' on it!

The halter style of today's outfit is really ideal for showing off toned arms. And while today's outfit feels a little too dressy for the office, I just love all the ruffles and flounce, so of course I had to wear it. Wearing something fun, something you love, makes the day that much brighter! Is it Monday, after all!

Outfit Details

DressBCBGMaxAzria Halter Polka Dot Black and White Ruffle Dress

Find the dress at Bloomingdale'sLord & Taylor and Amazon. I'm wearing a size four, but I really should have sized down to a 2; the dress is big on me, especially at the top.

There is also a gown version available on BCBG.com if you need a truly formal dress for a special occasion. It has a v-neck (rather than the halter style) and the ruffles reach all the way down to your toes. It's truly spectacular! (I just wish I had more cause to wear these types of formal dresses.)

Shoes: Sophia Webster Mika Polka Dot Leather Pumps (no longer available)

Chapin and I had a great weekend, spending a lot of time together eating and just hanging out. We went out to a new restaurant, Aziza, on Saturday night, and had a Pizza & Pedicures Day in Inman Park on Sunday. We do love our food.

The gluten-free pizza at FRITTI in Atlanta is the best ever!

Chapin loves his pizza!

Summer Light

Shoshanna has released the perfect summer dress: denim, with multi-colored buttons adorning the front, it's too cute NOT to wear, and perfect for a busy Friday at the office.

Unfortunately, being in my usual morning rush, I neglected to realize the dress needed to be ironed. Oh well!

Outfit Details

Dress: Shoshanna Olevia Denim Midi Dress

(You can also find it here!)

Shoes: Manolo Blahnik Khan Clear Strap Sandals in Gold

This clear style is sold out, but you can still buy them in suede. They are super comfortable, with a blocky heel that makes them easy to walk in.

As it's Friday, I'm looking forward to a relaxing weekend with my husband and our three fur-kids. We are loving every minute we spend with Norman, Wally and Tulip. We just started the new season of Big Little Lies, so I imagine we'll be doing some binging this weekend, along with dinner a new restaurant that just opened near us: Aziza! I love trying new places to eat, so I'm excited.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Fierce

This dress makes a statement: that the woman wearing it is bold and confident! I'm not sure if that truly describes me... but I'm trying to live up to it!

Dress: Alice + Olivia Judy Ruched Polka Dot Dress

The polka dot version is sold out, but Alice + Olivia just released the same dress in a beautiful red.

Shoes: Alexandre Birman Shadow Sandals

I chose these shoes purposefully to juxtapose two contrasting patterns: stripes and dots. I like how the two patterns work together, and that the shoe choice is a little unexpected.

Work has been super busy this week, and I can't believe it's already Thursday (and almost the end of the month). With Tulip joining our family, we've been trying to keep our days low-key, but here are some highlights from recent weeks:

  • Projects: Chapin is in the midst of building Tulip a ramp so she can get on and off the couch with ease. She can't jump up or down due to her knees, and if you happen to get up -- even if it's just to go to the bathroom or get a drink from the fridge -- she will bark and bark. She doesn't like to be left behind! We're still teaching her how to use it, but hopefully she will get the hang of it soon.
  • TV: I'm re-watching the entire Veronica Mars series before diving into the new episodes that just hit Hulu. I'm behind on a lot of new shows right now as a result, including Big Little Lies and The Handmaid's Tale.
  • Food: Chapin and I just recently started getting meals from Green Chef, which offers a gluten-free plan. I haven't been excited about every meal, but they have all been tasty, and it gives Chapin a nice break from meal planning/ grocery buying.
  • Baking: Super easy recipe alert! I recently made these Butterscotch Cocoa Brownies for my dad's birthday, and they were a big hit. The sweetness of the butterscotch chips plays nicely with the dark chocolate cocoa for a satisfying treat. The only change I made to the recipe was using butterscotch extract instead of vanilla extract to bolster the butterscotch flavor.
Have you been shopping? My favorite shopping month of the year is coming to a close, but I'd love to hear about all the amazing deals you scored. Let me know what's new to your closet in the comments.
