Working on Halloween

Although in the past I have often dressed up for Halloween, as my career has advanced, I have been forced to treat Halloween like any other day. I can at least wear black for the occasion, though, and you can be sure I will be greeting our neighborhood trick-or-treaters in costume tonight (stay tuned).

Dress: Cynthia Steffe Black Peplum Dress

I have many, many little black dresses, but this Cynthia Steffe dress is one of my favorites. It's very flattering all around. I especially love the square neckline, which is very attractive in a more subtle way.

My husband has been traveling all week, so our little pug mix, Norman, has been very restless, especially the last two nights. I have dark circles to match the dress, I guess.

Here is our Halloween photo from this year. We did a whole Ghostbusters theme, though you can barely see Norman in his ghostbusting outfit. George looked so cute in his Stay Puft Marshmallow Man costume.

I've Never Seen Purple Underwear Before, Calvin

Today's dress, being purple and from Calvin Klein, reminded me of a certain scene from my favorite movie of all time, Back to the Future. I am super stressed at work this week, so thinking of that movie makes me smile.

In other news, I am re-reading The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, since Part I comes out in theaters in just a few weeks. I already bought tickets for the opening weekend. Go Team Peeta!

Halloween Themed Outfit

Halloween is just days away, so I decided today I would break out this orange and black dress from Shoshanna.

Rising Sun

I needed to get to work early today, so I took today's post before the sun had fully risen. It makes for a beautiful photo, though! You can see the pink sky in the background.

Dress: French Connection

Unfortunately, no matter what I do, this dress wrinkles. Oh well! Here's a very similar French Connection sheath dress, available in navy and a few other colors. Remember that French Connection runs small, so size up.

Checkered

This dress always makes me think of a checkerboard, especially since I usually pair it with red accessories. I always enjoyed playing checkers as a child. My sisters and I had a two-sided game growing up: one side with the typical checkerboard, and the other with Chinese checkers. For some reason, we never learned to play the Chinese checker side... I have no idea why! I still don't know how to play to this day.

Checkers also makes me think of a certain scene from Overboard, one of my favorite movies ever. It is such a quotable movie. "Eat your checkers!" Check out the clip below.

Neon Lines

Lines can be so important on a dress or any other item of clothing simply because they can play tricks with your eyes. Horizontal stripes can make you look wider, while vertical stripes have a more slimming effect.

I love the strategically placed neon lines on this Shoshanna tweed dress, which is cozy and warm (as my dresses go) on this chilly Atlanta day. You will rarely see me in pants, even if it's freezing out. During the winter, I just add tights!

Be Bold

Dress: Milly Ella Belted Sheath Dress in Violet

I love a good belted dress for its potential to accentuate a small waist and make you look a tad thinner than reality. Since I have more of an hourglass figure, a belted look worst well on me.

I bought this dress several years ago, so it's essentially sold out online, but check out these other belted looks from the Milly brand. (The designer's name is Michelle. Love it!)

Seeing Things

I certainly did not have the relaxing weekend with my boys that I had planned. When I went to bed this past Friday night, my eye was bothering me, and the pain became increasingly worse throughout the night. Early Saturday morning, I was diagnosed with an eye ulcer in my left eye. It's my first one. I hope I never have one again.

The punishment is that I cannot wear my contacts for at least a few weeks. I have not worn glasses to the office... ever. It's the nerdy 12-year-old girl in me that refuses to be seen in public in eyeglasses. Hopefully they don't look so bad, since I'll be wearing them every single day for a little while. Scroll down for a look.

Sweater Weather

I can't believe I'm saying it, but sweater weather has officially arrived. Although the highs are still in the upper 70s/early 80s, the mornings are starting off cold and crisp. Today, I broke out my first sweater of the season... a sweater dress, of course. This is me we're talking about!

Studded

I have been sick all week, and am finally going to the doctor today. I think I have a sinus infection! You can see that even though I went to bed at 9 p.m. last night, which I haven't done in forever, I still look exhausted. I have so much pressure and pain in my sinus area... I just want to feel well again.

Rainy Day Blue

It's raining cats and dogs today, so I thought I would wear a dress to match the weather. I think this blue dress is just beautiful; the pattern and the colors remind me of the ocean in moonlight.

The Structured Sleeve

Happy Columbus Day! I am working on this (faux) holiday, but things seem calmer than usual. I am getting so much done!

Today I'm wearing what I think is a very fine example of a structured sleeve. I think the quality and detail here is just fabulous, and the puffiness makes my arm look more slender.

Mad for Plaid

It's finally Friday! Today I'm in a more casual dress since I don't have any in-person client meetings. I'm very excited to start a relaxing weekend with my boys.

Today is extra special because my wonderful parents are celebrating 38 years of marriage! What an accomplishment. Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad.

The color is Essex Street Tweed. I love that!

Choosing the Unexpected

Sometimes I think I am a little too traditional when it comes to my style. I have always liked simple, elegant, feminine pieces. So, today I thought I would try something a little different: pairing a green dress with purple shoes. I know it doesn't seem like much, but for this classic dresser, it's (hopefully) a step in the right direction when it comes to taking more risks with my fashion sense. (In Sex and the City terms, I'm definitely more Charlotte than Carrie.)

Keeping Up with Zooey Deschanel

I love actress Zooey Deschanel's style, both on screen (on the show, New Girl) and off. That's why I was so delighted to see a Shoshanna dress already in my closet show up on a season one episode of New Girl a few years back.

I think Norman was a little jealous that George had the opportunity to be featured on yesterday's blog post, so he decided to pose for today's photo.

The Look of Love... on a Pug

If you don't have a dog -- or, more specifically, a pug -- you may not understand the bond of love between a pet and his mommy/daddy. I don't have children, but I do know that I would do anything for my George.

Foiled

I am going with a bit of a 60s vibe today with this Shoshanna shift dress, which shines bright like a piece of foil, and light pink lips.

You can see I look especially tired today - I'm so glad it's almost the weekend and I can sleep in. I'm also really excited to get my first blowout tomorrow at Dry Bar for my friend, Emily's, wedding. Then Sunday, we are planning to see Gone Girl! I can't wait.

Shoshanna.com still has the dress available for just $99 in a few sizes. Also check out the topskirt, and a more dressed up version of the dress. All these pieces are made with the same fabric as the dress I'm wearing today.

Hi-Yo, Silver!

I don't normally wear a lot of big jewelry pieces, but my cousin, Alicia, gave me this beautiful piece for my birthday this year, and I was super excited to wear it. I like how the necklace dresses up what is really just a simple navy dress.

Think Pink: It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I am wearing pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which starts today. Many brands are selling products specifically to help raise money for breast cancer research. I love this Bobbi Brown collection of pink lip glosses, for example. Is it time to start my holiday shopping yet?
