Why I Love the Sheath Dress

Sheath dresses are such an easy win for working women. They are ready-made outfits that you can easily dress up or down depending on your footwear and accessories. While they hug a woman's curves, they are often very flattering as well, providing shape and giving extra emphasis to an hourglass figure. The sheath dress portrays a more commanding figure; you are going to sit up and listen to the woman who enters a room wearing a sheath dress. (Are they the next generation's pantsuit?) Best of all, they are a great "transition" dress between day and nighttime wear. You can start your day in a sheath dress at the office and easily wear it out to dinner or drinks that evening.

Can you tell I like this dress type for the office? I tend to save my sheath dresses for days when I will be more active as opposed to sitting behind my desk creating marketing plans and strategies. I just feel like people take me more seriously in this type of dress. Do you agree?

Today's dress was a find on my favorite site, RueLaLa.com. Leave a comment or message me if you'd like an invitation. I really recommend this site because the featured items are truly a good deal, as opposed to sites like Gilt where the savings are only superficial. MyHabit.com is another good deal site. I often find dresses for around 75% off the retail price.

I'm such a sucker for a "matchy-matchy" outfit. The diamond pattern in my booties perfectly match the diamond pattern in the dress.

Shout out to Erin for loving my recent slew of blue and purple dresses. It's so cool that people actually read this blog.

The Classic Sheath

When it comes to professional work wear, my go-to piece is always the sheath dress. I especially like a silhouette that is belted (to show of a small waist) with an open neckline.

One of my favorite necklines is the square neckline, which I feel allows you to show off your curves in more subtle way. That's why I jumped to buy this flattering tweed sheath dress from Kay Unger, even though it's a little big on me. (I wanted to wear it today when I had meeting after meeting after meeting; usually I would get the dress altered before wearing it.)

Outfit Details

Dress: Kay Unger Blue Tweed Belted Square-Neck Sheath Dress

The dress, my first from the Kay Unger brand, is still available at Lord & Taylor. Honestly, this brand tends to skew older (more "mother of the bridge), but this dress works for all age groups.

Shoes: BCGeneration Peep Toe Pumps

There are flecks of gold in the tweed pattern (this picture doesn't quite do it justice), so I would normally wear my gold Casadei pumps with this dress. Unfortunately, I left them at my mom and dad's house over the weekend. After celebrating our faux Thanksgiving, I changed into jeans and a tee to watch the final Hunger Games movie with my sister and good friend, Elizabeth. I can't believe the Hunger Games trilogy is finally over!

Real Women, Real Style... Shop 4.Collective

I love a structured sleeve, as readers of this blog well know, so of course I fell in love with this blue sheath dress from 4.Collective. I frequently tout this (fairly new) brand's designs, because they are so ideal for the working woman. 4.Collective even launched a real women, real style campaign that I think perfectly defines the brand's aesthetic.  It's important to me that I still feel feminine, fashionable and chic in the office, and 4.Collective dresses definitely provide me with some stylish choices.

Dress: 4.Collective Pipe Trim Cap-Sleeve Sheath Dress in Blue (no longer available, but check out this similar style)

Shoes: L.A.M.B. Pumps

As a part owner in my company, Local Marketing, Inc., it's important that I look professional every day. You never know if a client is going to make a sudden appearance in the office, or if I will be called into an important meeting. My days of wearing jeans to work are far behind me.

Celebrity Sighting!
Amy Robach and Ginger Zee from Good Morning America are fans; I've spotted them in a few 4.Collective dresses. My mom and I both love this morning show and Ginger's fashion sense in particular, maybe because we normally get to see her whole outfit. (She is in front of the weather map and not behind the anchor desk like Amy.)

April in Atlanta

If the bags under my eyes seem heavier than usual, it's because it's April in Atlanta, and that means allergy season. The pollen hasn't been too bad (yet), I think because of a brief cold spell we had in March, but my watery eyes and constant sneezing tell me the worst is yet to come.

I've been debating getting allergy shots again for years - I suffered through three years of them as a child - but my work schedule is so jam packed I don't really have time. I guess I will just see how the season goes...

Warm in Wool

I love wool dresses, and they are perfect for cold, windy days like today. But living with two pugs means any fabric like wool is immediately covered in pug hair. Oh well, what can you do? I'm not going to give up my two cuddle bugs. Norman was being especially sweet this morning, wanting to nestle in my lap while I ate my breakfast.

Today's outfit is from my favorite designer, Shoshanna: just a simple blue and black wool sheath dress. Colorblocking is one trend that I have embraced wholeheartedly.

Here is a shot with the blue Kate Spade purse that perfectly matches the blue in the dress.

Time for Auburn

My post title has more meaning than just a reference to football season; you may not have noticed, but my hair is now an auburn color. Auburn for Autumn on this first full day of Fall.

What do you think of the new color?

Gilt Groupe is a smart brand. In addition to selling designer clothes, shoes, accessories and more at discounted prices, the company is also now making its own products. This dress, from the Ava & Aidan line, is one such item. It's very similar to dresses produced by labels like Black Halo and Single, but the color, silhouette, quality... everything works. Best of all, this dress and many others like it are available now for under $100.

If you're interested in joining Gilt Groupe, you can use this link to garner an invite. You get $25 off your first purchase.

Lady in Red

In case you couldn't guess from the title of this post, I am dressed in red today. I know that title is pretty cheesy, but I was watching Baby Mama for the 100th time last night, so it seems fitting.

Anyway... I am wearing a red sheath dress from Chequer, paired with black Nine West shoes and my black Michele bag. Chequer, as I may have mentioned before on this blog, is an internal brand at Bloomingdale's, one of my favorite stores. Chequer dresses are always chic and well made, and I especially like this one for its vibrant red color, overall silhouette and inside lining. Unfortunately, I could not find the dress for purchase online, but here are some similar red sheath dresses available now:

- Kate Spade Raya Red Silk-Wool Cap-Sleeved Sheath Dress

- Calvin Klein Pleated Scoopneck Sheath Dress

- DIANE von FURSTENBERG "Jori" Jersey Sheath Dress

- Elie Tahari Ruffled Jersey Sheath Dress
