Tough as Lace

Dress: 4.Collective Daniella Cap Sleeve Lace Sheath Dress

The dress is also available on Amazon, though sizing is limited.

Booties: Prada

I love the juxtaposition of this ultra feminine white and black lace dress with the tougher look of these Prada booties. I just love this look!

The Latest Deal

One of the best things about a holiday weekend: all the good sales! This past Memorial Day was no exception. I stopped by Bloomingdale's and scored this Elie Tahari dress for just $76. It retails for $400, so... what a deal! I love a good bargain.

Outfit of the Day:

Dress: Elie Tahari Axel Mixed Media Sheath Dress

Shoes: Kate Spade New York

This actual dress is sold out online, but there is a sleeveless version that comes in solid colors like a peach/pink (peach sorbet) and black. It's available at several retailers, including:

This short sleeve Elie Tahari dress also comes in a similar silhouette, though without the cool mesh slash.

The dress is a little heavier than I normally like to wear this time of year, but pairing it with sandals and minimal accessories can help "lighten" it up for warmer weather.

Navy Does It

I am so excited about the new purse that Chapin gave me for my birthday. I finally have a navy bag! I have been searching for a good navy purse for a long time, and Kate Spade New York finally delivered.

Outfit Details

Dress: Shoshanna

Shoes: Jimmy Choo

Purse: Kate Spade New York Knightsbridge Constance Croco Embossed Patent Leather Tote

The bag, which seems to be sold out, came in a few colors -- navy, brown and cream -- and you can still find it available for purchase on eBay. I am such a sucker for purses that have that 1950s vibe, and this bag is definitely in that vein. I also like that it's larger than most of my purses, so I can easily fit in essentials like my iPad if I need to travel.

Here's another photo of my new favorite arm candy. I like to think my grandmothers toted around a purse like this one back when they were around my age.

Let's Go to the Movies

We went to the movies this past weekend for the first time in what seems like forever (translation: six months). Chapin wanted to see the new Mad Max adventure, and since he hardly ever wants to go to the movies, I agreed. We met up with our friend, Elizabeth, at Phipps Plaza, where they have the best movie going experience in Atlanta (in my humble opinion).

I wore one of my favorite sundresses to the theater, and I had just had my hair done earlier that day, so it's at its reddest. What do you think? Chapin is probably going to be mad I even posted this photo, since he had "no product" in his hair.

Dress: Nine West Polka Dot Navy and Green Sundress

The dress is no longer available (I bought it several years ago for a steal), but Amazon has a great selection of Nine West dresses. Here's a similar style.

Chapin asked why I wanted to wear a dress just to go sit at the movies, and I explained that I preferred a dress over jeans (too hot) or shorts (just not as comfortable... I have to keep pulling them down). It all comes down to comfort, right?

Shoes: Tory Burch Navy Suede Flats

Hair: Jill Gregory at Grow Salon in Decatur, Georgia

Jill has been cutting my hair for years, and I followed her when she left Adore Salon in Inman Park for Grow Salon. Decatur is a hike for me, but I don't care - I don't trust anyone else with my hair. We have tried some fun things over the years: chopping my hair off, highlights, layers, and now the red. It's fun to experiment!

Purple or Blue

I have a hard time deciding if the color of today's dress is blue or purple. I went with amethyst jewelry, so I guess I'm thinking purple... What do you think?

Flats: Kate Spade New York

Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

Shine On

Outfit of the Day

Dress: T Tahari

Shoes: BCBGMaxAzria

I look so tired in this photo, and I definitely went to bed too late last night. I wasn't even doing anything, just watching some old episodes of Buffy in honor of yesterday's anniversary. (May 20th is the anniversary of the series finale: May 20th, 2003. I wasn't even married back then!)

We started with "Once More With Feeling..." and I just started watching the next few episodes, too. Season 6 was when the Spike/Buffy romance heated up, and that always sucks me in.

Today's dress isn't my favorite, but it's cute enough. I am running out of unique outfits to post on the blog, so I'm starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Ha! I received some Amazon gift cards for my birthday, so maybe it's time to buy a new dress (or two).

Blueberry

"You're turning violet, Violet!" I am in all blue today, so I feel a bit like a blueberry. Blue nails, blue shoes, blue dress. I'm blue... Da Ba Dee.

This weekend should be a good one. We will be attending my husband's 20th high school reunion, and watching the Mad Men series finale on Sunday night. I am a big fan of this show, mainly because it's a world I understand now (advertising/marketing), and it's fascinating to see how business was conducted in this industry during the late 1950s to early 1970s. The characters on the show also started their own firm, something I have experienced first hand.

And then there's Peggy Olsen.

Seeing how Peggy has changed and what she has endured as a working woman during this time in U.S. history has probably been the best thing about Mad Men. Sure, watching Don sabotage his life is intriguing, but it's Peggy who keeps me tuning in. Her relationship with Don is also one I love to watch.

I also think Roger is hysterical, and I will miss his one-liners. Who can forget this quotation from the show's fourth season, something any person in marketing or advertising will understand:

"My father used to say [advertising] is the greatest job in the world, except for one thing: the clients."

Ha!

Nanette Lepore for My Birthday

My mom and sisters got me two Nanette Lepore dresses for my birthday, and I'm wearing one of them today!

I love how the purple in the print perfectly matches these Manolo Blahnik pumps!

Outfit Details:

Dress: Nanette Lepore Painterly Floral Print V-Neck Fit and Flare Dress

Available at 6pm, NanetteLepore.com, and Amazon.

Shoes: Manolo Blahnik Ankle Strap Pumps

My book club is meeting tonight, in part to celebrate my birthday, so I thought it was appropriate that I wear one of my new birthday dresses today. We're going to a restaurant I haven't eaten at in a while: Two Urban Licks. The last book we read, The Girl on the Train, by Paula Hawkins, was a great read, and I highly recommend it if you like suspenseful books in the vein of Gone Girl. I'm excited to talk about it!

Celebrity Sighting!
April, the main character on Chasing Life, wore the dress on the Season 2 episode, "Truly Madly Deeply."

Floral Confetti

Body hugging (bodycon) dresses featuring a print can be hit or miss. Oftentimes, a print can make you look bigger than you are, but the small flowers and confetti design here is exquisite and doesn't do any damage to your figure. I like designers that think about how their creations will look on a real person and not a skinny size 0 model.

Outfit of the Day Details:

Dress by Shoshanna

This scuba dress is still available on the designer's website for a great price. But it's not lined, so I recommend you Spanx it.

Sandals by Stuart Weitzman

I paired the dress with neutral colored shoes because I wanted to keep the attention on the dress, and not draw the eye away from it. But there are so many beautiful colors (pinks, greens and purples) swirling around in the print, that the dress will also work with a brightly colored shoe. Have fun and experiment, and don't be afraid to make up your own rules. When it comes to fashion, anything goes - as long as you like it. (At least, that's my philosophy.)

Welcome to 37

This past weekend, I turned 37. In some ways, growing older is a relief, and in other ways, it's terrifying.

Green lace dress by Shoshanna

I have more wrinkles on my face, and a few gray hairs, but I'm happy and healthy. That's the important thing.

And while I miss George everyday, I'm grateful for the other two men in my life right now: Norman and Chapin.

I am loved.

Playing Favorites

In honor of my birthday this weekend, today I thought I'd wear one of my favorite dresses: this pastel blue creation from my favorite designer, Shoshanna.

Laser Cut

Dress: Shoshanna Anna Dress in Black and Mint

Shoes: Jimmy Choo

Purse: Kate Spade New York

We celebrated May birthdays in the office with cupcakes and gluten free cookies. The two other ladies in this photo are turning 24... I have a lot of years on them. I am getting old enough now that I don't relish celebrating my birthday. Can I just turn 21 again?

May the Fourth Be With You

This weekend, we celebrated my nephew, Cole. He turns one today, and officially has the coolest birthday: Star Wars Day (May Fourth). My sister, Laura, and her husband, Matt, threw Cole a birthday party at their home in Sugar Hill (Buford), Georgia, this past Saturday. It's about an hour drive for me from West Midtown, but I love getting to see my nephews and the rest of my family. Poor Chapin had to work and missed out on all the fun.

Posing with my sister, Laura, and her son, Cole
As you grow older, you realize the importance of family. My mom has become my best friend as others have drifted out of my life, busy with their own families. She has become a great shopping buddy!

The outfit I chose for Cole's party was a casual dress with an open back - actually a gift from Laura for Christmas!

Dress: Plenty by Tracy Reese Fit and Flare Dress

I love how this print is described: Electric Plaid! It's a perfect description.

Tracy Reese is a leading African American designer, and has a several facets of her label. The Plenty by Tracy Reese line tends to skew a little younger, and is definitely cheaper than her main Tracy Reese designs. (Mrs. Obama is a fan.)

Purse: Rebecca Minkoff Studded Mini Quilted Affair Purse

Sandals: Manolo Blahnik Perpia Strappy Stretch Sandals

Fun Fact: I recently spent a day as an extra, and wore this dress with the purse above. The movie will be out next year, so I will share details as the release date gets closer. I hope I made the final cut!
