All I Ever Wanted

Chapin and I took a long overdue vacation this month -- our first real vacation in about three years. We've taken long weekends here and there, but it had been way too long since we escaped to somewhere far away for a full week to just rest and relax.

Our destination: The Cayman Islands.

Sunset, Grand Cayman, December 2016
Day 1: Arrival (Saturday, December 10th)

We left Atlanta on a Saturday. The week leading up to our departure had been cold and rainy, so we were excited to get away. Chapin dropped Wally and Norman off at my parents' house, where they would spend the week following my mother's every move, and then we were on our way.

The flight to Grand Cayman from Atlanta is quick and easy: just two and a half hours. I watched Bad Moms on the plane, read a little of my book, tried not to annoy Chapin too much, and by then we had arrived.

Here are a few tips when traveling to the Cayman Islands:

  • Bring a pen. Chapin and I had to fill out our little customs form at the last minute, because we both forgot to pack a pen. This rule is actually a good one to follow any time you leave the country.
  • Go the bathroom before you get off the plane. The entire airport is being renovated, and the line to get into the country was long, so if you have to go to the bathroom, use the one on the plane before you depart. You can thank me later.
  • Arrange travel from the airport to your hotel ahead of time. Apparently, taxi drivers can charge whatever they want in the Cayman Islands, and they often take advantage of visitors. We should have asked if our hotel, the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort, had a shuttle or other means to pick us up from the airport. Fortunately, we lucked out, and the fare was reasonable.
Other than that, our travel to the Cayman Islands went very smoothly!

Once we arrived, we walked from our hotel to Coconut Joe's for lunch. I enjoyed a delicious salad with grilled jerk shrimp on top. The seafood there was wonderful during our entire stay.

After lunch, we spent a few hours at the beach. The days were short there, with the sun rising early and setting before dinnertime. After the sun was down, we enjoyed some live music and food (nachos) at the hotel. It was a good way to ease into our week in the Caymans.

Day 2: Scuba Diving Refresher (Sunday, December 11th)

Chapin and I were up early on our first full day in the Caymans for a scuba diving "refresher" with DNS Diving. Dive Masters Sarah (American) and Simon (Australian) picked us up from the hotel at 7:15 a.m. Chapin got certified in high school, and then went through the certification process again with me in August 2012. But after completing our open water dives in the Florida Keys, neither of us had been diving since.

That said, we needed a quick refresher. I had a minor freak out moment once we started descending, but was fine once we were under the water. It's not scary; it's more about controlling your breathing and feeling comfortable using the regulator. Plus, it had been over four years since our last dive. Scuba diving is definitely something you feel more comfortable with the more you often you do it!

Refresher Dive Location: Shore Dive From Macabuca

First Dive of the Trip: December 11, 2016. I was just getting used to diving again.

Post Dive Selfie with Chapin. My nose turned purple from mask squeeze or broken blood vessels. (I'm still not sure what happened.)

We earned our dinner that night (scuba diving actually burns a lot of calories), so we decided to try another restaurant we could walk to: Craft Food and Beverage Co. This great gastro pub served a variety of different dishes. Chapin had the duck special and I had something called a Tuna Poke, which was basically a tuna and avocado seaweed salad.

Day 3: Full Day at the Beach (Monday, December 12th)

Monday was the first full day we spent at the beach. We slept in, and decided to try breakfast at a local restaurant: Cimboco. We could walk there, and the food was excellent, especially the potatoes. I always wake up starving, so breakfast is essential for me.

We spent the rest of the day at the beach, just lounging, drinking and reading. The hotel offers beach chairs that are almost right in the water. You look up, and there's ocean. It was wonderful. Chapin and I agreed that it was the best beach from our (limited) travels. (We've also been to beaches in the U.S., Costa Rica, St. Thomas and Puerto Rico.)

Although we basically did nothing the whole day, we treated ourselves to a lovely dinner out at Agua Restaurant and Lounge. (Drinks like Pina Coladas fill you up, so I think we even skipped lunch that day.) It was a fancy place, so we dressed up, and we both enjoyed wonderful seafood for dinner.

I wore this cute Parker Holly Strapless Floral Lace Combo Dress for dinner out at Agua. You can still find it online at Saks and Amazon! I'm wearing a size small for reference.

Day 4: Time to Dive (Tuesday, December 13th)

Tuesday, it was time for our first real dive of the trip. After feeling cold on the refresher dive, I decided to wear my wetsuit. The water was around eighty degrees, but it didn't feel that way to me.

A wetsuit is a smart fashion choice when scuba diving. It not only keeps you warm, but protects you from things in the ocean that can prick or sting you, like coral and jellyfish. (On my first open water dive in the Florida Keys, I was stung everywhere that wasn't covered by the wetsuit, mainly my neck, wrists and ankles. Thankfully, there were no jellyfish spotted in the Caymans.)

I was much calmer during the boat ride out to our first diving spot, though still a little nervous. The other divers, aside from Chapin, were two older American couples who had been diving for years. Talking to them definitely put me at ease.

We had great weather and the dives were both fantastic. We saw some amazing fish, coral reefs and even a turtle.

Dive Locations: Hepp's Wall and Bonnie's Arch

We were exhausted after diving, so even though we just spent the rest of the day at the beach, we ended up just staying at the hotel for dinner. It was a Mexican theme night! I wore this cute Blithe sundress and Coach Clarabel Studded Flat Sandals for the walk downstairs to the hotel restaurant.

Staying In: We dressed up for dinner in the hotel restaurant.
On the Grounds at the Marriott: We took some photos outside before dinner.
Day 5: Reading for Me and Scuba Diving for Chapin (Wednesday, December 14th)

Chapin decided to get an extra day of diving in, but I wanted a day of rest, so we spent a little time apart on Wednesday morning. While Chapin was off diving -- he did Portobello and a drift dive from Lighthouse Point to Bonnie's Arch -- I stayed at the hotel, had a leisurely breakfast, and read outside.

I will say that we really enjoyed the coffee the hotel served. We found out later it was Paradise Coffee Grand Cayman. We even bought a few bags to bring home. Unfortunately, it seems like a hard brand to find in the States. Oh well! I will enjoy the coffee while I can.

I finished two books and started a third during the trip:

I just loved the Valley of the Moon, which I finished when we returned from the trip. But I read the majority of it at the beach, and just devoured every minute. I enjoyed The Rosie Effect and laughed out loud several times (though not as much as the original), tolerated The Singles Game, but loved Valley of the Moon

I guess that's my ideal vacation: beach, reading, eating and relaxing!

Dinner that night was a bit of an adventure. We planned to go to one restaurant, but ended up at another. There was no signage out front, so we thought we were at the right place until we sat down, ordered drinks, and started looking at the menu.

We were actually at a restaurant called Le Vele, although we had planned to go to another restaurant called Casanova for some Italian food. It turns out, Le Vele had just opened, and we ended up enjoying the meal. I had a dish with three kinds of risotto on one plate!

Risotto at Le Vele

After dinner, we had a drink and dessert at the hotel. It served this amazing salted caramel ice cream dessert that was worth every calorie!

Day 6: Another Day of Diving (Thursday, December 15th)

We decided to do one last day of diving in the Caymans, and I probably enjoyed these dives the best out of all the dives on the trip. I was definitely starting to feel more comfortable under the water, and I had worked out the kinks on some of my first dives. (I was heavily weighted on the first dive. They had mixed up the weights for me and Chapin, so I spent most of that dive trying to stay out of the sand.)

Dive Locations: Northwest Point and Spanish Anchor

After we returned from our dives, we walked over to Camana Bay, a shopping area with a movie theater, restaurants and retail stores. It reminded me a lot of Atlantic Station here in Atlanta. We ate lunch at Waterfront Urban Diner, grabbed some gelato at Gelato and Co., and walked around.

We had a little bit of beach time before it was time to shower, change and dress for dinner at Blue Cilantro. Chapin picked out the night's restaurant, and it was my favorite meal of the trip. It was an easy walk from the hotel, and the food and wine were wonderful. The sommelier even came over and chatted with us after praising us for our wine selection.

I wore this beautiful Black Halo Lopez Sheath Dress in hot pink for dinner at Blue Cilantro. I recently had it altered, and it fits my body perfectly. You can still buy the dress at Saks or in black at BlackHalo.com or Amazon.

Fashionista on Vacation: Wearing Black Halo for dinner out in the Caymans.
Day 7: Final Full Day of Leisure (Friday, December 16th)

On our last full day in the Cayman Islands, we decided just to sit back and relax. We slept in, had breakfast at the hotel, and spent the day at the beach. We snorkeled a good bit, and relaxed in the sand. It was a great day!

Snorkeling at the Hotel: We didn't have to leave the Marriott to enjoy snorkeling.

Snorkel Selfie
For dinner that night, we finally ate at Casanova, and it was wonderful. I wore another Black Halo dress for the occasion, and we got a great photo in front of the setting sun.

People complimented me left and right on this dress. Some woman even yelled a compliment across the street as we were walking back to the hotel after dinner. Too funny! You can still buy the Black Halo Jevette Sheath Dress at Saks Off Fifth, or at BlackHalo.com. It also comes in a navy blue if you don't like the "jigsaw rose" pattern I'm wearing.

Day 8: Time to Head Home (Saturday, December 17th)

We spent our last day in the Caymans at the beach, doing more snorkeling and just sitting by the ocean. Soon, we were at the airport and heading home to Atlanta and our pugs. Although I missed home, we had a wonderful week away, and I highly recommend the Caymans as a relaxing vacation destination.

Here's my favorite photo from the trip: our scuba selfie!

Mesh Dresses: Subtly Sexy

It's starting to really feel like winter here in Atlanta. The temperature today won't go above 41 degrees! That is definitely not typical for our Southern city.

Today I'm wearing a long-sleeved dress to help keep me warm. It's sexy -- but in a subtle way. The mesh for the top is not see-through -- although it looks like it, right? There is actually a nude-colored fabric underneath. The sleeves and hem have the true mesh fabric.

Dress: Shoshanna Alesia Long-Sleeved Mesh Striped Dress

Sandals: Jimmy Choo Patent Leather Wide Strap Sandals in Nude

It's really too cold for sandals, but I couldn't help myself; I just adore these sandals. I know they don't look it, but they are super comfortable for a high heel. You can also get them in gold.

Dress of a Different Color

If you like the same dress in different colors or patterns, then I think it's fine to have multiple versions of it in your closet. I have this same dress in lace, but I also loved it in this pattern and winter color palette, so now I have both versions. Plus, I couldn't pass up the great deal I got on the dress at my local Belk store!

The dress is available at a variety of online retailers, including:

Shoes: Stuart Weitzman Soundtrack High Heel Sandals

Today is the first sunny day we've had in quite awhile here in Atlanta. It started raining late Saturday afternoon (the day of my husband's 40th birthday party), and didn't stop for three days. I know we need the rain after our 40-day drought, but I really missed getting outside and taking the dogs on long walks through our neighborhood. Sometimes, you just need the sunshine.

Chapin Turns 40

We celebrated Chapin's 40th birthday this past weekend with a party at our home in West Midtown.

Food:

I surprised Chapin with catered food from Figs & Honey Catering, a local Atlanta caterer. I tried to pick items I thought he and the rest of our guests would enjoy. The menu included:

  • Biscuit Sliders with Oven-Roasted Turkey, Fig Preserves, Brie and Basil
  • Crostini with Hummus, Caramelized Onions, Feta Cheese and Black Olives
  • Crostini with Roasted Fig, Serrano Peppers and Goat Cheese
  • Smoked Duck Quesadillas
  • Basil and Ricotta Baby Potatoes
  • BBQ Pork Sliders with Whole Seed Mustard Coleslaw
  • Crab Cakes with Roasted Red Pepper Aioli
People commented all night about how much they liked the food, so I think it was a hit. I highly recommend Figs & Honey Catering if you're looking for a caterer in Atlanta.

It's hard to believe this handsome guy is 40!

Dessert:

I wanted to do something big for dessert, so I ordered a beautiful cake from a Norcross bakery called For Goodness Cakes. I wanted to make it unique to Chapin, so the cake included two layers of his favorite flavors: the bottom layer was chocolate with peanut butter mouse, and the top layer was cookies and cream.

The outside was also customized for Chapin, with images of some of his favorite things (pugs, Star Wars, and Auburn). The cake was delicious, and definitely a worth a cheat day for me.

Fashion:

I wore a Halston Heritage Abstract Orchid-Print Fit and Flare Dress for the happy occasion. You can still buy it at Saks Off 5th, or in black and pink at Amazon.

Delicate Balance

Many dresses today like to mix different prints or fabrics. In this case, with this BCBGMaxAzria dress, a traditional striped dress is taken to the next level with the addition of lace at the neckline and hem. I also love how the stripes are going the right ways to make you look bustier/thinner! I so appreciate that.

Dress: BCBGMaxAzria Bryonna Striped Lace Dress in Merlot and Black

The dress is still available for purchase at Amazon and BCBG.com, and also comes in Blue as well as this Burgundy/Merlot.

If you don't want a dress, this style is also available as just a top. It would work great with black pants or jeans.

Sandals: Kate Spade New York Idelle Ankle Strap Dress Sandals in Black Patent

It might be a little chilly for sandals, but I really don't mind. I will wear sandals every month of the year.

How to Wear a Cape

After a long holiday weekend, I am feeling refreshed and ready for the week ahead. That's why I decided to wear this cape dress from Trina Turk today, because the best way to wear a cape is with a lot of confidence.

Outfit Details:

The dress is available at Dillard's, as well as in other colors at a variety of other retailers. For example, find it in white at TrinaTurk.com or green at Neiman Marcus. A variation of the dress also comes in pink at Nordstrom Rack and navy blue (indigo) at 6pm.com.

I've been wanting a cape ever since I saw Gwyneth Paltrow wear that gorgeous white Tom Ford cape dress to the 2012 Oscars. Since then, I've seen capes creep into a lot of collections, but never at a price point I could afford... until now!

If you're not sure you can pull off a cape, try it out via Rent the Runway (you can order the dress in black). You will certainly make an impression! I had some curious looks at the office today; a cape dress is definitely a high fashion look for the workplace. But if you feel good in the dress, that confidence will show.

It would have been easy to wear blue shoes with the dress, but I decided to bring out the more subtle purple and burgundy in the plaid pattern via these purple Manolos and amethyst earrings. I love the whole look, which -- let's be honest, here -- is a little different for me. I'm not usually a fan of a shift dress, but paired with a cape, anything goes.

Thanksgiving Recap

Here's a quick rundown of how I spent Thanksgiving 2016:

Wednesday, November 23rd

Chapin and I took Wednesday off, packed up the car, and drove the seven hours or so to New Orleans to spend the holiday with Chapin's family. Our boys came along, too, and were fantastic in the car, mostly sleeping... though there was some occasional whining (mostly from Wally). We bought the boys new Sleepypod harnesses, which are supposed to be safer than the Puppia harnesses we have used in the past. Here is Wally in his orange harness.

Wednesday night we had dinner at a great Mexican restaurant in New Orleans called Mizado Latin Kitchen. I loved trying all the different types of salsas, and the food was all so good.

Thursday, November 24th (Thanksgiving Day 2016)

We spent Thursday at the Gibbons house in New Orleans, watching the Thanksgiving Day Parade and the National Dog Show, chasing Pokémon, sipping wine, playing with Wally and Norman, and eating (of course). Here are our two nephews with Wally and Norman during one of our Pokémon Go excursions. I don't play the game because I'm worried I will get addicted, but at least it's good exercise! I enjoyed spending the time outside with my nephews, too. They are growing up so fast, and are just so adorable. They loved on Norman and Wally so much and really tired them out.

Friday, November 25th

We headed back to Atlanta on Friday, so we were in the car most of the day. I read a new book aloud to Chapin on the drive, so that kept us occupied, and the drive (both ways) went much faster than I expected.

The book is Dark Matter: A Novel, by Blake Crouch. You will like this book if you liked the TV show, Fringe. It's about parallel universes and how they intersect for one particular man. Chapin and I found ourselves yelling to each other regarding some of the choices the main character made, but it definitely kept us entertained.

By the time we came home, I was exhausted, so I put on some music and a face mask, and just relaxed in the tub for a bit. We ordered in -- Indian food from Tabla -- and spent the night relaxing. I also watched the first episode of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. I had been looking forward to watching the show (just four episodes) for months and months!

Saturday, November 26th

I spent most of Saturday watching the next two episodes of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. I loved snuggling on the couch with my boys, some coffee, and Rory, Lorelei, Emily, Paris and the whole gang from one of my favorite TV series of all time. Gilmore Girls is one of those rare TV shows I revisit every few years. I'll watch the whole series again, from start to finish. I do that with just a few shows: In addition to Gilmore Girls, I like to re-watch Buffy, Veronica Mars and Sex and the City. See, it's a very short list!

Here I am on Saturday morning in my Urban Tee Farm Gilmore Girls t-shirt, some coffee in my pug mug, and Wally and Norman in their usual spots on either side of me. It's such a relief that they are getting along!

Chapin and I also managed to squeeze in some food (pizza at Amazza -- yes, mom, they have gluten-free crust!) and some shopping on Saturday afternoon. After spending two nights at a hotel with the boys, and sleeping in a king-sized bed, Chapin and I decided that we finally needed to upgrade the queen-sized mattress we've had for years. Having both boys in the bed is wonderful, but they take up a lot of room, and Chapin and I haven't been sleeping too well. We bought ourselves a new Sleep Number bed, and we are so excited. I guess you know you're getting old when buying a new mattress brings you this much happiness!

Sunday, November 27th

I saved the last Gilmore Girls episode to watch Sunday morning, and after crying my way through most of it, I called my sister, Gail, so we could dissect the ending. It ends on a cliffhanger, and I'm really hoping they end up making more episodes at some point in the future. It's been so wonderful to revisit the series in this way. Thank you, Netflix!

Sunday, the last day of our vacation, was mostly about errands: buying our Christmas tree, decorating, grocery shopping, cleaning, laundry, etc. It was the right way to end our relaxing Thanksgiving break.

Thanksgiving is such a nice holiday, not just because of all the great food involved, but because it's about family, and recognizing all the unique things that make your life wonderful. I am thankful for my husband, parents, sisters, in-laws, and friends. I am thankful for the two furry boys who love me unconditionally. I am thankful for the wonderful memories I have of George and Izzie, the two pugs I loved and lost. I am thankful for a job I love and a company I'm helping to build. I am thankful for a closet full of beautiful clothes, shoes and purses. I am thankful that I am (relatively) healthy -- despite the allergies and celiac, I'm doing ok. I am thankful that I can look myself in the mirror and feel proud of the career, marriage and home that I've built.

Happy Thanksgiving!
