Happy Halloween! I always love this day of the year, when you can become someone else, watch scary movies, eat lots of candy and sweets, and pretty much wear whatever you want... and get away with it. This year, we decided to dress up as a family:
Chapin is Mario from the Super Mario Bros. Nintendo game
I am the princess, Princess Peach to be exact, who is waiting patiently for Mario to get his ass in gear and save the day
George is the evil dragon, Bowzer, who is holding the princess hostage
We had fun last night attending a Halloween party, although, as I was steaming our outfits, I realized that we did not have the bushy mustache that was supposed to be part of the Mario costume pack. So, we had to improvise, and I ended up drawing that mustache on Chapin with black liquid eyeliner. I think it came out pretty well, don't you!
We are also dog sitting for the weekend, so George has had a playmate. Here is a sweet picture of Zooey. I think we have realized after having two for the weekend that we are not ready to get another dog yet. Maybe we will be ready someday, but for now, we will just be a family of three.
Happy Halloween to all my readers! I hope you enjoy today as much as I am (so far)!
As a fan of fashion, I am also a huge fan of the Lifetime TV show Project Runway. In fact, it has inspired me to want to learn to sew, so that maybe I can make my own clothes someday instead of spending so much money buying other people's designs. My mom has actually offered to teach me. She is a master at crafts and has made all the drapes and curtains in her house. When she was in high school, she also sewed her own clothes, and made the dress my grandmother wore to my Aunt Annamarie's wedding.
However, my mom has her work cut out for her... The last time I tried to sew -- in 7th grade Home Economics class back in New Jersey -- I made a pin cushion and ended up with the material inside out. Don't ask me how. Aside from baking, I am not the best at keeping house.
But I digress! The reason I wanted to mention Project Runway is because Chapin and I were both very upset at the outcome of last night's Season 8 finale. (Yes, my husband watches the show with me, and we have fun discussing whose outfits we like and who we think will go home.) This season has been filled with a lot of bitchy egotists, and though one, the evil Ivy, went home several weeks ago (finally), we were left with Ms. Big Head herself, Gretchen.
SPOILER ALERT: That Gretchen ended up the winner over the sweet, talented Mondo left me a bit angry and disillusioned. Although I really respect Nina Garcia's opinion, Gretchen's clothes on the runway were just BLAH! Mondo's clothes , on the other hand, had color, pop and zest, and I have included a few of my favorites on today's blog post.
I think Entertainment Weekly columnist Missy Schwartz put in best when she wrote, in her finale recap:
"It was here, in the middle of the heated deliberations, that I started to realize that the Mondo victory that seemed so inevitable at the top of the hour was no longer a fait accompli. It was not a good feeling. It’s true that Nina proposed (albeit rather unconvincingly) that they hand both finalists the crown. But that suggestion quickly disintegrated under the force of her increasingly fervent defense of Gretchen (“These clothes are on trend!”) and MK’s increasingly bitchy demeanor. To Jessica Simpson’s observation that Gretchen’s clothes were loose fitting, MK barked, “Hello! Read a magazine!” (That was way harsh, Tai.)
And I love the Clueless reference.
As for my outfit today, I went with a military inspired green dress from Laundry by Shelli Segal. I could not find the dress online, but here is a similar miliatry dress from Phoebe Couture.
I paired the Military Ponte Dress with my L.A.M.B. Gorgeous Women's Pumps, which are, to me, stunning! I love the gold and suede detailing. I am also wearing my bracelet watch and diamond studs.
I guess I chose to wear this dress because it sort of Halloween-y, although not really... I miss the days when I could wear my costumes to work!
I am exhausted today, probably because I have not been getting enough sleep lately. So, I apologize in advance for the bags under my eyes. The alarm went off as usual, but I turned it right off and went back to sleep. Although I didn't get my workout in, I hope the extra sleep did me some good!
Today I'm in a simple brown Eva Franco dress and BCBGMAXAZRIA Women's Harper Peep Toe Wedges in Dark Taupe. The dress is very comfortable, which was my top objective when choosing my outfit this morning. I went light on the jewelry simply because I was in a rush to get dressed after sleeping in a bit: just my diamond studs and rings.
Today I'm in a Betsey Johnson dress and shoes, an outfit I have had for several years. I love the deep v neckline, as well as the little cap sleeves. This type of sleeve is very flattering on just about anyone, and can help slim the arm. That flutter, combined with the cap sleeve's feminine flair, are why I always seem to seek out dresses with cap or puff sleeves.
I could not find this Betsey Johnson mini-dots dress available for purchase online, but here is a picture of Eva Longoria wearing the dress.
Although the dress appears plain black and white in the picture, the white is actually more of an off-white on the trim, and the dots are beige. I matched the dress with these Betsey Johnson Leland T-Strap Platform Pumps in the same color. These pumps are unfortunately no longer available for purchase online.
Today is October 26, 2010, and 25 years ago today, Marty McFly traveled back in time. I couldn't let this day pass without giving a special shout out to my favorite movie of all time, Back to the Future.
I still remember seeing this movie with my sister, Gail, and my mom in August of 1985, when I was seven years old. I was enamored even then, and Back to the Future was rented many, many times in our house throughout the 80s. It also produced a crush on Michael J. Fox, probably my first celebrity crush. (I had a poster of him on my closet door that I used to kiss... on the lips!)
There's also a reason my pug is named George!
So, I thought I would celebrate today by sharing my top ten favorite moments from the film, many of which are captured in this great clip on You Tube.
#10: George McFly Dancing
He is just having a great ole time dancing alone near the punch table, waiting for his turn to prove to Lorraine he's not a pushover after all.
#9: Do You Know What This Means?
Marty shows up to try to get Doc to believe his time travel story. I love the supposed mind reading contraption on his head that he soon realizes doesn't work at all. Christopher Lloyd could not have delivered that line better.
#8: George McFly Laughing
I don't think I have to elaborate too much on this one...
#7: My Pine!
As Chapin well knows, I randomly love the scene in this movie where Marty, having just landed back in 1955, knocks down one of Old Man Peabody's pine trees. The expletives he launches as Marty hightails it out of there make me laugh every time: "You space bastard. You killer pine!" You'll also notice how the name of Twin Pines Mall changes to Lone Pine Mall by the end of the movie.
#6: 88 Miles Per Hour
Doc Brown and Marty McFly watch in awe as the Delorean reaches 88 miles per hour. It also produces one of the film's best lines: "When this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you're going to see some serious s***."
#5: Darth Vader visits George McFly
When Marty has trouble getting his father to ask his mother to the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, he dresses up in his radiation suit, hooks George up with some ear phones, and blasts Van Halen. Crispin Glover is priceless in this scene as George.
#4: George Punches Biff
Although I didn't understand at the time what would have happened to Lorraine had George not shown up, I have always gotten immense satisfaction seeing him punch that jerk in the face.
#3: Calvin Klein Skateboards Into Lorraine's Heart
This skateboard scene is a classic... and Marty is an "absolute dream."
#2: You're My M...
Marty's awkwardness and confusion in this scene are palpable. I remember asking my mom to explain to me about a "hope chest."
#1: George McFly Comes Through
My favorite scene of the movie still makes me smile to this day. As Marty watches his hand disappearing, then realizes he is about to be "erased from existence," George steps up and kisses Lorraine, saving the day.
Today I wore a sleeveless floral dress because I'm not sure how much longer these high temperatures here in Atlanta will stick around. The dress in question is the Leifsdottir "Shadows Cast" Printed Spun Silk-Cotton Day Dress, which unfortunately I could not find for purchase online.
Leifsdottir is available at many major online retailers, so if you like the dress, check out these stores to see what else the brand has available today.
The Leifsdottir.com site also tends to have a great sale section, so refer to it first whenever you are thinking of making a purchase.
I love the neckline on this dress, and it's very comfortable, yet still looks chic and professional. I actually don't think this dress is all that flattering on me, which could be because it's a little big on me. Oh well.
I also wore my bracelet watch, diamond/ sapphire earrings, and scuffed up blue BCBGirls pumps because they are the only navy shoes I own! It's actually hard to find nice navy shoes these days! If you see any online, let me know...
Halloween is coming up, and I ordered costumes today for me, George and Chapin. I won't reveal our costumes just yet... you will have to wait for this weekend to see the pictures. As many of my friends and family members know, Halloween is one of my favorites holidays. Dress up, sweets and parties... who could ask for more? :)
It's been warm and humid in Atlanta the last few days, and Monday was very rainy and stormy, so I decided to start back at work after my vacation wearing a bright, vibrant color: this beautiful emerald green. The dress is from Rebecca Minkoff, who is definitely more known for her handbags than her clothing, but I fell in love with the cut and color of this dress at first sight.
The dress is the Rebecca Minkoff Ilaria Dress, which is still available in black, red and a sweet floral pattern on RebeccaMinkoff.com. I also realized as I was researching this dress that Buffy star Michelle Trachtenberg recently wore this dress in red. How cool!
Although it wrinkles easily, I like many of the unique aspects of the dress: the tulip design of the hem, the low cut and knot in front and the puff sleeves.
